Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students come from homes with limited opportunities to explore the world around them. They lack computers, books and open space to investigate the living things that inhabit their world.

The majority of the students in my classroom are second language learners who have immigrated to our country to escape poverty and violence and hope for a better life.

My school is a Title I school in an urban setting. My students love learning about the world around them, through books, computers, and real-life objects, since they often do not have these types of materials at home. They are so excited to share and talk about the books they find about science in our school library, as well as bugs, leaves, and other natural things they find outside during recess. They love to share their knowledge and ask me many questions about everything they sense outside!

My Project

The materials I chose for my project will allow my class to discover the nature of life cycles in a hands-on and literature-rich way. The butterfly garden and plant lab will provide an authentic examples of life cycles and inspire my students to think critically about a life cycle. The thematic libraries will provide us with books to enrich our discussions about life cycles and habitats and help my second language learners learn new vocabulary. The life cycle center activities will allow students to apply their knowledge in an independent activity.

The materials for my project will help my students to learn and understand the new scientific vocabulary and provide a real life example of life cycles in the classroom.

This materials will make the learning experience so much more powerful for my second language learners, who have limited life experiences. I also hope that these projects will spark an interest in science that they will carry with them as they progress through their school careers.
