My Students
Hello! Thanks for taking interest in my amazing group of students.
This vibrant group of 10th graders is enthusiastic and eager to read stories that connect to their actual lives.
Unfortunately, our school library contains few books that meet the requirements of this under-served population. Engaged citizenship begins with strong literacy skills; however, students have difficulty engaging with books when they see no connection to their everyday lives. They deserve to see their world in print.
80% of students receive free/reduced lunch, 97% are students of color, and there is a large immigrant population, most of whom whom are second language learners.
My Project
Many of my students carry trauma into the classroom; trauma around identity, family, and school. Besides the trauma of their lives, they carry trauma from years of fear and shame concerning their academic skills, reading in particular. This trauma keeps students reading at a 4th to 5th grade level well into high school. It tracks them into classes with high incidence of behavior problems and is self perpetuating.
I am endeavoring on a research experiment that focuses on getting students to read an hour a day by introducing them to books that connect to their everyday lives.
My school is underfunded and lacks books that hold meaning for my students. My hope is to build a small class set of books that can engage students attention, day after day.
