Many of my students carry trauma into the classroom; trauma around identity, family, and school. Besides the trauma of their lives, they carry trauma from years of fear and shame concerning their academic skills, reading in particular. This trauma keeps students reading at a 4th to 5th grade level well into high school. It tracks them into classes with high incidence of behavior problems and is self perpetuating. I am endeavoring on a research experiment that focuses on getting students to read an hour a day by introducing them to books that connect to their everyday lives. My school is underfunded and lacks books that hold meaning for my students. My hope is to build a small class set of books that can engage students attention, day after day.
