My Project

This book will be the heart of a year-long project where my gifted and talented students explore life beyond their own experiences. Thirst tells a powerful, real-world story that helps students connect with people and challenges from another part of the world. Each student will have their own copy to annotate, highlight, and reflect in—giving them ownership of their learning and encouraging deeper engagement. Together, we’ll start important conversations about privilege, survival, and hope.

Throughout the year, students will dive into big ideas like fairness, equity, and access to basic resources.

Using this novel alongside another from a different region, they’ll discover that clean water—something many take for granted—is a daily struggle for millions. These books will open their eyes to global issues, encouraging them to ask questions, think critically, and discuss possible solutions. Students will also engage with community members and organizations to learn about efforts already underway and how they can contribute.

To wrap up the unit, students will create projects to raise awareness and participate in a “Walk for Water” event to help others understand the daily reality faced by many. This experience will not only strengthen their reading and writing skills but also grow their empathy, curiosity, and sense of responsibility.
