Third Graders Will Flip For Family Traditions!

My students need 5 Flip Ultra camcorders to capture interviews with family members in order to create a class project examining cultural traditions from our diverse classroom.

I teach third grade at an internationally-focused, dual-language immersion, public charter school in Washington, DC. Our school serves a high-need community with a large immigrant population. As a school, we strive to involve parents in the education of their children.

Many students in my class are native Spanish speakers trying to learn to read, write, and speak both their native language and English. They face challenges of identity as they move between their school and home cultures. Recently, a class parent from El Salvador approached me, concerned about her son's refusal to speak Spanish with her at home. I realized that focusing on a theme of "cultural heritage," I could help my students examine and understand the value of their unique cultures and traditions.

As part of the over-arching "cultural heritage" theme, my students will choose a family tradition to examine more closely. They will be responsible for writing their own interview questions and choosing a family member to interview. After using the Flip Camcorders to record their interviews, we will create a class video celebrating our different family traditions. Not only will my students learn more about their own cultures and those of their classmates, but their families will become valued contributors to the education of their children.
