Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Benjamin Franklin said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn." Keeping these words in mind, I envision that tablets will help me reach my students using technology that will truly involve them in engaging, memorable learning experiences.
I am fortunate enough to teach a group of enthusiastic, eager-to-learn third graders.
Although our school is in a high poverty area where nearly every student receives free lunch and few are able to experience technology outside of the classroom (most are below poverty-level), they come to school with an "awesome Viking attitude" each day. Our school currently has a population of over 1,000 students and a computer lab that only allows for 20-30 minutes of computer time per student per week. Our classroom has one student computer that is ancient and usually broken. In order to meet the demands of our new Common Core Standards, all third graders must learn to type proficiently and use computer/tablet technology in the next few months...with these limited resources.
My Project
If my project is funded, these 2 iPad minis will allow me to integrate apps and interactive media into the classroom experience. For example: more students can access our technology/typing skills program from our curriculum, eBooks will allow me to supplement my classroom library with digital content, and my students can also access an endless number of apps that will help them learn using technology-centered material.(Read Naturally to track and develop reading fluency, Mad Libs to be creative with parts of speech, and Scholastic's ebook app, Storia, to read books from all content areas and develop comprehension at their level...just to name a few possibilities.) With the rigorous demands of Common Core Standards and the approaching technology-centered assessments, I would like to give my students opportunities to develop their technology/computer skills with tablets. My students love to learn, especially when it involves hands-on technology, so I would like to reach them in that way.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom and my students' experiences by helping bridge the gap between my students and others who have regular exposure and experiences with technology.
They will have more of a chance to develop the skills necessary to survive in this world of ever-changing and evolving technology. My students will be able to have a more enriched, engaging educational experience with this technology because of donors' generosity.
