"The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it from you" I saw this quote by B.B. King on a wall while I was walking. This has been my personal theme for my third grade students this year. This is the year when this age group is reading to learn.
The third graders are a mix of diverse cultures, Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Irish, and African.
Some of the students are English language learners. We attend a large city public school in an area that qualifies for free lunch programs. Overall the classroom is high energy and excited about learning robust vocabulary words. The students are also using technology as the respond to composition. I enjoy the quality of literary discussions embraced by this class.
My Project
Through this book donation project, the students will learn how to respond to literature by using graphic organizers that include main idea and details, making inferences, drawing conclusions, and questioning the author. As the students engaged in chapter discussions with peers they will have the opportunity to agree or disagree with opinions. This lesson will use questioning and critical thinking to scaffold conversations that cite text as evidence to support written and verbal responses in how friendship can make a change for a better.
The book donation will have a significant impact on the students because the children experience the value of a donation.
Sometimes it's common to experience a donation given by someone who wants to discard an item. This book donation is different because you will donate a new item that will add to literacy experience.
