Just because you may not be able to read it, doesn't mean that you can't experience it. That is my mantra for this school year. I want to expose ALL my students to grade level books even if they cannot read them on your own.
Our school district has close to 25% special education students along with a large Title 1 population.
Many of these students are not able to read at grade level. I would like to read more books as a class where every student has the same book in their hands. This way all students get exposure to the vocabulary as well as make predictions together. Research has shown that being able to follow along as others read grows a student into a better reader by just being exposed to the words. Jim Trelease, educator and author of Read Aloud Handbook, "A child's reading level doesn't catch up to his listening level until eighth grade. You can and should be reading seventh-grade books to fifth-grade kids. They'll get excited about the plot and this will be a motivation to keep reading."
My Project
My students will be able to read the same book together as a class while having discussions about the book, increasing comprehension as well as being exposed to the same vocabulary words. Both of these books are written by Jerry Spinelli which will also lead to an author study. The first book, Third Grade Angels, will be read in the beginning of the school year which is the appropriate reading level at that time. The second book, Fourth Grade Rats, will be read at the end of the year which is the appropriate reading level at the end of third grade.
Donations to this project will allow my students to all read the same book and gain the same literary skills.
Our school cannot afford to order classroom sets of books so it usually takes me years of purchasing at garage sales to obtain a class set. My class will then share these books with the other two third grade classes to enrich their literacy as well.
