Thinking About Cultural Literature

Help me give my students literature to share about people around them and people like them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are excited about returning to in-person learning again. Hooray! We are coming back into the classroom. They come from homes with few books but have the curiosity to learn, learn, learn. They can show empathy and understanding for groups different from their own, once they are exposed through good literature.

Our classroom neighbors, who share the same need for cultural literature, have now challenged our class to read culturally relevant literature.

We know it won't be easy, but we are in it to win it! Let's go!

My Project

We have been challenged to read culturally relevant literature. We need your help!

We want to read as many books as we can about different groups.

We will read in small groups, to meet the readers at their levels and competency. We will create reports to share with our neighbors and receive their reports as well. We will examine the different kinds of texts as a class looking for the author's purpose and cultural trends. Some books will be mirror texts—books about ourselves. Others will be to learn about the world around us. We want to make personal connections through literature about the world around us.

We have chosen titles to reflect the different people at our school. We are challenged with other classrooms to read, read, read. You can help us to do that!
