Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle school is located in a very small, rural, farming community. We have a very high free and reduced-price lunch rate population, alongside a high migrant student population, and English Language Learners. This creates many inequities in the learning process. Students need extra support in most courses due to these many factors.
Our goal, as educators in this unique community, is to try and bridge the gap caused by socioeconomic status, migrant living, and being English Language Learners.
Students who live a migrant lifestyle will often have numerous gaps in their learning due to changes in schools, standards, and expectations from place to place. Many of our students also spend time traveling from family to family and have extended periods of time spent outside of the U.S. where there is no public education. Our school is in major need of support for these students with special needs.
My Project
My students need a class set of molecule model kits to help understand the relationship of atoms, molecules, and the conservation of matter while studying STEM. It is part of the NGSS that all middle school students understand that all matter is made of atoms, and what better way to explain it, than to allow students to build their own molecules made of atoms. It is also a NGSS standard that all middle school students understand photosynthesis, which is actually a quite complex chemical equation and not easy for all students to grasp. These kits will allow them to manipulate molecules to model photosynthesis.
Additionally, these modeling kit will make learning much easier for my learners, many of which come from migrant lifestyles, some with learning disabilities, and many of which speak English as a second language, and therefore have more learning needs than other students.
Please consider helping donate to this project which will help these students who deserve the absolute best education especially in the ever growing field of STEM. Their need for great learning opportunities is massive. When students are given hands-on manipulatives their engagement and learning go up dramatically, which is exactly what this project aims to do.
