We are a small, hidden gem of an elementary school, an intricate mosaic representing many cultures from around the world. For some of our students this is their first experience of formal education; for others, it is a continuation of the academic life they lead in their home countries. Despite economic and social challenges our students thrive in creative, flexible learning environments.
Our school library is a peaceful hub of self-directed learning and inspiration, filled with reading materials that reflect our diverse community.
For many of our students the school library may very well be their first introduction to libraries, so making the library feel comfortable, like a home away from home, is our goal. From our very youngest students just learning how to turn pages in a book, to our mature readers, to our students new to English, we want their experience of the library to be memorable.
My Project
Creating an active yet relaxing library environment is fundamental to nurturing a sense of well-being and contentment in our students. Our library is filled with as many as thirty students at a time who love nothing more than finding tucked away areas where they can work on class projects, an individual curiosity, or simply relax with a good book.
Having resources like comfortable pillows, baskets for organization, and book bags available for our library patrons creates a sense of belonging vital to fostering the competencies of the American Association of School Libraries––to think, create, share, and grow.
