Student success directly correlates to their social and emotional well-being. This past school year, I created a sensory space for our school. Our sensory space is called the Stable. The Stable is a space that is available to all children in our school. It is a space where children calm themselves, regulate their bodies, and learn skills and strategies to get their mind and body ready to learn.
This coming school year, our school and school district have been faced with budget cuts and staff reductions.
As a result, our school will not always have sufficient staff supervision needed to operate the Stable on a consistent, daily basis. We will continue to use the Stable as often as supervision permits. However, to help ensure children still have opportunities to calm and regulate themselves, even when visiting the Stable is not an option, I am creating portable sensory toolkits that will allow dysregulated students opportunities to get themselves ready for learning within the regular classroom with the supervision of classroom teachers, classroom aides, student buddies or classroom volunteers.
