Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a new Middle School in the Bronx in our 2nd year. Many of my students come in to our building significantly below grade level. It is my job to not only push them to improve their reading and math skills, but also enjoy being active and engaged learners and readers.
My students are not unlike many other 6th graders in the Bronx.
They are unaware of how sparse our school library is and view reading as a burden, not a source of enjoyment. There are books that relate to EVERYTHING these students are interested in, at reading levels that they can access. Many of my students are significantly below grade level and reading has always been a source of frustration and embarrassment. By funding this project, you are helping me VALUE reading as a learning tool and provide these students with independent reading books, they can and want to read.
My Project
My students have 1 full hour set aside every day for independent reading. Yet, our school library is not stocked with the kinds of books these students are capable of reading, or interested in engaging with. Through one-on-one conversations with my students, I have compiled a list of books that are on their reading level and that they are genuinely excited to read. Many of these books are on topics that I was passionate about at their age, and had the privilege of reading about in detail. Sports, video games, superheroes. These topics don't have to be denigrated by teachers but should instead be embraced as a way to meet students at their interests and ability levels.
My students will feel confident and comfortable reading these books.
It will allow them to feel truly INTERESTED and EXCITED about our independent reading periods. Finally, these books will provide interesting and relevant reading material at a reading level my students can access independently, both at school and at home. Thank you!
