I teach at a new Middle School in the Bronx. We are in our second year and believe in providing first and foremost a safe and creative space for our students. Our student body is eclectic and diverse, representing the melting pot of immigration and diversity that is the Bronx. Last year, our students traveled into the future and boarded a colony ship to Alpha Centauri in one of our units of study. They spent their time calculating their ship's trajectory in math, discussing sound leadership in English, learning about Eastern Philosophies and their potential application in Social Studies, and analyzing soil from their new home planet in Science. Many of our students come into our building significantly below grade level and there is always a constant pressure to catch them up to their peers. At my school, and in my classroom, this overarching concern for preparing students for their exams and honing their academic skills never comes at the expense of creative and innovative thinking.
