This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are ninth graders in a high poverty inner city district.
They face many challenges, both in and out of school, challenges even most adults don't have to face.
Like all young people, they have hopes, dreams, and goals. For many, school is where they can explore and grow, both academically and emotionally.
Now that we're 100% virtual until January (as of now), my students will be facing even more hurdles. My goals as their teacher is to facilitate their growth, to help them see and implement academic and career goals, and to help them become the best individuals they can be.
My Project
Learning virtually poses an exceptional challenge for my students, many of whom live in home-insecure environments. Though they need to improve their reading and writing skills, many ebooks are don't have characters and lives similar to my Brown and Black students. This hinders full engagement.
Enter Townsend Press!
Their ebook library takes online reading and writing to a whole new level! What's particularly special about their ebooks is that many feature Black and Brown characters, with lives students can identify with. In addition, all the books, including nonfiction and literature, are leveled at the appropriate Lexile, have high-level content, and wonderful support materials and exercises!
