My Students

My students are fighting an uphill battle in more ways than one and they need your help. Each day my students arrive at school after a bus ride of up to an hour and a half. They arrive hungry and tired. When they get off the bus they know that they are a part of a class that is 'different' than their same age peers. My students' are in a Special Education classroom. Their disabilities range from Autism, Down Syndrome, visual processing, auditory processing, intellectual disabilities, and emotional disturbance issues. On top of this, some students also have the additional challenges that come with being second language learners. All my students live in high poverty neighborhoods where crime and violence is considered a natural part of life.

My class is an active and safe place where we engage in numerous activities that allow learning to happen in ways that are as unique as my students.

We also focus on real world learning objectives where students will be able to manage their lives and their finances to a degree that might break the cycle of poverty. SImply put, we make learning fun and functional.

My Project

Teaching special education students can be challenging. I'm happy to say that the easiest thing to do with my students is to get them to fall in love with reading. Most of my students come to me dreading reading because it is something they have always struggled with. By introducing them to reading books as a class, and sharing this experience, they begin to take their guard down. Then when I have them listen to books as they follow along, they realize that they do understand the stories and can respond the question about the characters and plot. By providing the books in the Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing Series and audio CD's for them, my students will be able to read books above their skill level. Doing this builds reading confidence. When they begin to build reading confidence they will pick up easier books and start to read independently. We also read with them and let them read to and with each other. Eventually, I will have students who want to do nothing but read. This year alone I have 14 students who have grown 2 years in their reading skills.
