My students are currently being taught at an in-patient psychiatric rehabilitation center. The center is located in Brooklyn, New York. Due to the nature of their treatment, these students are unable to come and go as they please. Students length of stay varies from short term (three to six days) to long term (up to 90 days). The population consists of inner city children ages four to twenty-one years. Many of the diagnosis's are centered around their behavioral struggles. These issues make it difficult for them to function in a community based school. Being hospitalized is a step in the right direction. However, the environment is very lonely because they are away from their family and friends. Their visitors are limited to certain times and much of their contact to the outside world is limited.
Physical Education is the only subject that has an impact on your life each and every day.
By providing students an opportunity to be active, practice athletic skills, embrace recreation and become fit, Physical Education class can help with gaining confidence and interacting within a group. The curriculum is designed to build upon basic skills while introducing challenges in a dynamic and engaging environment.
My Project
The students at my school are not allowed to have laces in their shoes and some have no shoes at all. The policy for participation in Physical Education requires that students have shoes. Many times students are not allowed to enter the gym because their parents do not leave their shoes.
By creating a shoe lending program, more students will be able to participate in physical education class.
My goal is to acquire enough shoes so any student that needs shoes can borrow a pair for the class. This project will provide my school with a great foundation for a shoe lending program.
