My students need notebooks, pencils, crayons, and erasers to express their thoughts, learn new things, and order their thinking. They have also recently developed a love of journaling leading to a need of composition notebooks and binders to organize their work and see their growth.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a very high poverty school. My students often live several families to an apartment, and often the children sleep on the floor. My third grade students are often the ones responsible for caring for their siblings at night when their mothers are at work.
My students are some of my favorite people in the world, and they deserve the best things in life.
They love learning, and have learned to trust themselves and accept failure as a new opportunity to grow.
My Project
About a month ago, I had a student tell me she wanted to "get some stuff out of [her] head" that she didn't want to say out loud. I shared how I use journaling, and gave her an extra composition notebook I had. She started a craze, and now I have a classroom full of introspective, thoughtful children with nothing to write in, and nothing to write with. In spite of hoarding extra supplies for the last 8 years, I am tapped. These amazing students need pencils, crayons, erasers, and folders to express their thoughts, learn new things, and order their thinking. Please help them if you can.
