My Students
On the Big Island of Hawai`i, our students have deep understanding of community. Sharing is second-nature to them and they are always willing to help another student in need.
Our students embrace ALOHA in everything they do.
Many of our keiki don't have all of the supplies and resources they need to excel. This is becoming especially challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic as family resources are even more strained. Student distancing in class prevent shared resources which my students have always been so ready to do.
My second graders are joyful, self-expressive, and resourceful! When they have even the basic resources they produce meaningful and reflective creations. It is so fun learning from them and helping them learn from each other.
My Project
Throughout the year, I have been so amazed by the extraordinary job my students have done in distance learning. They have made amazing progress academically, but they have had to spend so much time on the computer and have had limited resources at home. However, starting in March, my students will have the opportunity to come back to the classroom and learn in-person. We are all so excited!
I want to provide my students with a range of art supplies that they can use to express themselves and their learning.
My goal is to incorporate these art materials into SEL and mindfulness lessons and in a range of cross-curricular subjects including science, social studies, and language arts. I want to utilize this time they have away from the computer screen to get creative with my keiki and let their imaginations soar! From the few times we have done art projects in distance learning, I know they will have an amazing experience!
From creating pastel artworks depicting the journey of the Hōkūleʻa to creating models of the Earth, I want to engage my students in lessons that allow them to dive into the learning and embrace their creative sides. This will not only be beneficial for their learning academically but for their social and emotional health as well.
