Hawai'i is one of the most diverse states in the country and our student population represents that. However, the resources that our students have to represent themselves are limited to one or two colors. Our students represent a much wider spectrum of people, cultures, experiences. Each child should have the opportunity to represent themselves according to their own authentic ideas and self-perception. This project serves to provide each second grade student with crayons, colored pencils, and markers to create artwork that represents their diverse selves and their families. These supplies will be used to support student creativity and self-expression as well as an aid in social and emotional learning. We don't know how each student has been affected by the current pandemic and the situations they were experiencing at home. While art can be integrated in to just about every subject, it is a especially powerful as a tool to express themselves when it comes to social and emotional learning.
