To help calm students as they test and learn--especially for those needing support due to conditions like ADHD--the squishy sensory toys, fidget toys, and bendables have been invaluable. For many of my students, this was their very first time playing with real sports equipment, and seeing their pride and joy in mastering new skills has been incredible.\r\nEvery Friday, these activities have become something the whole class looks forward to. The books have been distributed among 9 special education preschool fully self contained classrooms here in west Hawai'i. The books were gratefully received by the teachers as funding here is very tight. Teachers have been using the books as staples to re-read over and over again. This supports student engagement in reading circle time. Having a story students are familiar with allows them to more fully participate in a dual conversations where language becomes more of a two way experience than just the teacher telling the story. \r\n Students have been more actively participating in the story and are able to generate more language related to the story as they are familiar with the characters, plot, problems, and solutions. Students are able to chime in to familiar parts of the story.
