Since receiving our new Cricut cutter, we have been using it to decorate our classroom and create personalized memory books for students to celebrate their learning and experiences throughout the year. The excitement on students' faces when they first saw the materials was unforgettable—they were eager to participate, ask questions, and begin creating right away. Having hands-on materials that feel special and personalized has made students more excited to participate in classroom activities.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite projects so far has been using the flower garden materials to make flowers together. What seemed like a simple activity quickly became an opportunity for growth in many different areas. Students loved creating and decorating flowers, and the process naturally encouraged important social and emotional skills. Many students practiced waiting their turn and being patient while sharing materials and taking part in the activity. We also saw increased social interaction as students encouraged one another, talked about their creations, and worked together in ways that built classroom connections.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are excited to continue using these resources for classroom projects, seasonal decorations, and memory books that help students reflect on their progress and accomplishments. We plan to incorporate more collaborative activities that strengthen communication, patience, and creativity while helping students feel proud of their work. Simple supplies that many people take for granted—pencils, paper, tape, and organizational materials—became essential tools that directly impacted our students' ability to stay engaged and productive. Thanks to this DonorsChoose project, my fifth graders were able to continue learning without interruption during one of the busiest and most academically demanding parts of the year. Instead of worrying about whether they had a sharpened pencil or enough paper to complete assignments, students could focus their energy on reading, writing, collaborating, and preparing for important end-of-year assessments. The fresh supply of classroom essentials restored a sense of readiness and stability to our daily routines. The new electric pencil sharpener alone made a noticeable difference in classroom efficiency and noise level. What used to be a frustrating and time-consuming process with old manual sharpeners became quick and seamless, allowing transitions to happen more smoothly and minimizing distractions throughout the day.\r\n\r\nThe addition of sturdy book bins also transformed the organization and functionality of our classroom library. Our students use mentor texts, independent reading books, and genre studies constantly, and before this project, keeping materials organized had become increasingly difficult. The new bins gave students ownership over their reading materials and created a more inviting, accessible library space. Students became more independent in selecting and returning books, and our classroom environment immediately felt calmer and more structured. Just as importantly, the portable microphone and sound system dramatically improved communication and participation in the classroom. Many fifth graders are still developing confidence in public speaking, and the microphone gave quieter students the courage to share their ideas during presentations and discussions. Students who were typically hesitant to speak up became excited to use the system, and their classmates were able to hear them clearly and respectfully. The sound system also helped ensure that instructions reached every corner of the classroom, supporting focus and reducing misunderstandings during lessons and group work. These tools didn't just improve classroom management—they amplified student voice, confidence, and engagement in meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nOne of the most impactful parts of this project was the support it provided for students' emotional and physical well-being during a stressful season of learning. Fifth graders often have a long stretch between breakfast and lunch, and hunger can make it difficult for students to concentrate, regulate emotions, and stay motivated. The healthy snacks funded through this project became an important source of comfort and support throughout the school day. Students knew they could rely on our classroom for nourishment when they needed it most, and that security helped them stay focused and ready to learn. The small rewards for our classroom \"treasure chest\" also brought moments of joy and encouragement during testing season. Stickers, bookmarks, and fun erasers may seem simple, but to students, they represented recognition, motivation, and celebration of hard work. These incentives helped build a positive classroom culture where effort and perseverance were acknowledged daily. Overall, this project supported not only our academic goals but also the sense of community, confidence, and care that every child deserves to experience at school. Because of the generosity of donors, my students were able to finish the school year feeling prepared, supported, organized, heard, and valued.","fullyFundedDate":1771635922602,"projectUrl":"project/refresh-refuel-and-project-a-mid-year/10106115/","projectTitle":"Refresh, Refuel, and Project: a Mid-Year Boost for 5th Grade!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Heintzelman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3263834_orig.jpg?crop=2208,2208,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720917147779","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/missdemeter"},{"teacherId":8367187,"projectId":10111841,"letterContent":"Thank you for giving our students the opportunity to self-regulate using sensory input tools.
