Help me give my students experience in using different art mediums in an elementary school that no longer offers art as a course for students. Art is a magical thing.
My 5th-grade students come from many different cultural and economic backgrounds in a high poverty rural public school. This gives the students the opportunity to view diversity as the norm in their classroom. As the emphasis of testing becomes more and more dominant in the classroom, students are often not exposed to visual arts. When a teacher is able to fit an art lesson in, the supplies are very limited.
My students look forward to learning the elements of art and creating their own masterpieces.
Students are able to express themselves in a unique way as well as calm their minds and bodies.
My Project
Students will learn the basic elements of art. They will create works of art to be displayed in the classroom and hallways.
My school no longer offers an art class taught by a licensed art teacher.
Funding for art supplies is not budgeted for teachers, therefore, students miss out on exposure to basic art principals. As an elementary teacher, I do my best to not just make crafts with students and teach them about the basic elements of art. This proves difficult without a supply budget. Art can enrich all subjects therefore, it is essential to tie art to all subjects.
