Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What would it be like not to be able to spell or read in today's world and to not have the opportunities to "play" with the language at home? Most of my students come from a home environment where English is not the spoken language. My students need varied ways of exploring with language.
I teach in a first grade class.
My students are from lower socioeconomic families where parents are working and where the latest video game is more important than purchasing a board game. These students do not have the opportunity to use and touch common learning manipulatives outside of school. However they are eager to learn and grow. It is important for them to be stimulated in a more simple way so they don't always need video entertainment to accomplish something. They learn that building words on their own and touching the tools can be very rewarding and fun. Every time I used a puzzle or hands on tool I find that the students are surprised at how much fun it is to interact with each other thinking and communicating, helping each other and accomplishing something for themselves. They are excited about coming to school and using tools that are fun and educational and that a lot of us just take for granted that everyone has an opportunity to use at home.
My Project
These tools will give my students a chance to use letters to build words on the wall. They can move and manipulate the letters to experiment with language by building words, making simple sentences and posting stories. It will encourage their interest in language arts by stimulating cognitive and reasoning skills. Legos are a familiar building toy that has now become an excellent learning tool as well. The students will be having fun while learning important skills that help them build their reading and writing skills while they "play."
By supporting this project you will make our classroom a welcoming and exciting place to learn.
The students will be excited about using this tool. They will work in pairs or in groups to challenge each other to build words, write sentences and write stories. As they encourage each other they will increase their skills through cooperative learning.
