My Students

Diverse. Looking at a picture of my 100 sophomores in a small, rural community in central Illinois may not bring this word to mind, but I can assure you, it's an accurate description. Some of my students come from million-dollar homes where their families live in comfort. Others come from places where the next meal is in question and they wonder if their parents will be home at all this week. Naturally, most of my students land somewhere in the middle.

In a school that practices inclusion, diverse also describes my students in terms of abilities.

Some of my sophomore students read at a 12th grade level, others at a 2nd grade level. Some have the knowledge and skills to succeed on their own while others need constant supervision and support.

My students are talented, creative, engaging people. They constantly amaze me with their humor, their persistence, and their ideas. With the right resources, they are all capable of success.

My Project

Approximately one hundred students take my sophomore English class each year, and by far the hardest thing to learn (or teach) is the writing process. In theory it's simple: draft, revise, draft. The key is the revision process, which is both time consuming and labor intensive. Students must type their work, print it off, submit it for revision, wait for me to suggest revisions and turn it back over to them, make revisions, then submit it for assessment. This system is disruptive to their creative process and forces them to do the one thing no one wants to do: wait.

The classroom writing process has remained the same for decades, but now we can improve it.

The amazing advancements inside the paper-sized Apple iPad Pro will allow me to provide real-time feedback to students and make revisions they can instantly see. This iPad will allow my students to look at their work and work alongside me to better their writing. No more printing. No more waiting. The precision of the Apple Pencil allows me to continue using the foundational tools of revision - proofreading marks and in-text comments - to do the things my bright red pen took weeks to do: point my students in the "write" direction.
