My students need the play "Gross Indecency" to supplement our reading of The Picture of Dorian Gray. The play will provide background about Oscar Wilde and give important context for the novel.
Our school is an arts school. The students are gifted in visual and performing arts. They are motivated and enthusiastic about learning, and they make connections between what we study and their own areas of interest. They enjoy being active and creative.
Since they are visual and performing arts students, they bring many special talents to class.
As an English teacher, I have many opportunities to draw on their talents, especially through this unit. My students love to express themselves through art, music, drama, and writing. They come from all over the area.
My Project
I will be pairing the play with Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. "Gross Indecency" centers around the trials of Oscar Wilde. The play will help my students better understand Wilde's background and society. It will also give my students a unique opportunity to pair a classic Victorian novel with a contemporary play. Many of my students will enjoy acting out the drama.
While teaching The Picture of Dorian Gray, I've found that many students wonder about Wilde’s life.
Last year, after reading articles about Wilde’s life, several of my students did further research into his trials. This play will help address this interest in further depth.
