Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
A majority of students in our school come from an economically disadvantaged background and as a result all our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Nevertheless, if you met them it is unlikely you would witness signs of maladaptive behaviors as they are happy children who love school and are eager to learn.
Our school is very diverse.
We have families from all over the world. In fact, 44% of our students are English Language Learners.
I am excited to offer and nurture a safe space where they can explore feeling comfortable enough for us to engage in meaningful, open conversation.
My Project
I would love to request books that show powerful accomplished people who identify as coming from a minority group or some other marginalized group. This includes women, people of color, and/or people from poor backgrounds. Many of my students are from poor backgrounds and are non-white. I believe having them read such books will show them that it is possible for them to take advantage of the opportunities that the world has to offer. I have chosen books such as "Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race" and "I am Sonia Sotomayor (Ordinary People Change the World)" because they discuss very important historical and current figures that beat the odds.
