Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school that is considered high poverty. Many of my students are English Language Learners.
My students bring a wide variety of interests and experiences into the classroom and are excited to learn.
However, at times they question their own ability to succeed due to the challenges they have already faced in their young lives. I am often astonished to hear what hardships my kids are facing.
While some students are intrinsically motivated, others require extrinsic motivators.
My Project
"I have always wanted a squishy ball, but my mom said we need to spend our money on food."
This is what one of my students said after earning a squishy ball from my prize box.
What she said inspired me to post this project on Donor's Choose. Her words emphasized how much joy some children get from earning small, seemingly inconsequential, prizes. These prizes may not be as coveted among a middle or high-class demographic. Children from a low-income demographic are not afforded the luxury of discretionary purchases.
My prize box serves many purposes. It not only brings delight to my students, but acts as an effective classroom management tool.
Classroom management is key to students success! Without this, students are not provided with an environment that is conducive to learning. There are many behavior techniques that I use to positively motivate my students. Without a doubt, my prize box is the most effective tool. The prize box never fails to motivates and encourage students to make good choices.
