Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"When given the choice of being right or being kind, choose kind."-R.J Palacio- "Wonder". Help my students walk in the shoes of a fifth grader who faces challenges every day because of the way he looks. This book teaches many important Reading standards but also important life lessons.
My classroom is filled with curious students who are ready to learn!
Our entire school qualifies for free and reduced lunch. Many of the students in my class struggle with access to materials such as books, paper, pens and technology. Our school is growing from a K-5 to a K-8 school which makes the demand for books higher since there are more students and teachers to compete with. Currently, our school library only has 3 grade level class sets which with six 4th grade classrooms makes it hard to support each classroom's reading needs. I have purchased a TON of books on my own to help meet the various reading levels but I only have one class set of books.
There is something powerful about a child that has a novel to hold in their hand during our reading block. It is different than reading out of a textbook, sharing a book with a neighbor or listening to a read aloud. The students create a bond with the text. They are more engaged and able to reference events whenever they need.
My Project
By having a class set of this book my students will be completely immersed in an experience that goes beyond the language and reading standards.
I read this as a read-aloud to a class of 30 students, but because of the content, vocabulary, and it's numerous narrators, it was difficult for them to not have the text in their hand. I knew that this book would transport my students into the life of a ten-year-old boy, Auggie, with an extraordinary face. Auggie must overcome many challenges. This book teaches perspective, in a very powerful way and I would like to teach it every year but with a copy in every student's hand.
With a class set of this book, all of my students will get to read this remarkable book, participate in class meaningful discussions about theme as well as connect it to the world. This will help their reading comprehension as well as teach them important life lessons.
By giving my students the opportunity to experience these challenges from the different perspectives in "Wonder," it will help them gain a better understanding of how to overcome their own challenges to show empathy and to always choose kindness.
