The Wonder of Us All

My students need a class set of the book Wonder and blank books for a literature study.

My Students

Providing strong, enriching learning activities/projects for my students is the best way for me to help my, somewhat sheltered, scholars to bloom and grow. Through exploration and multiple experiences in the classroom my students begin to realize that there are many opportunities available beyond the neighborhood they live in. This, in turn, helps them to broaden their perspectives and set goals that have no limit.

The Scholars of Room 255 are GATE/Excel students from a lower socio-economic area of Long Beach, California who work hard and are eager to embrace all that a strong education has to offer.

The scholars of room 255 always strive to do their best and are always looking for experiences that broaden their growth mindset. We explore the world from multiple perspectives inside and outside of the classroom. Being from culturally diverse backgrounds (mostly Hispanic, African American and Filipino), it is important that they not only have pride in who they are, but a good understanding and empathy for those who are different (culturally and otherwise) than they are.

My Project

Having a class set of the book Wonder will allow my students to have individual access to a copy of the book while we are reading and exploring its contents. The blank books will be a place where students can explore, write and draw about the characters in the book and, ultimately, reflect on their own characteristics and traits. The combination of these resources, will help my students explore the elements of fiction, strengthen their growth mindset and gain empathy/compassion for those who appear to be "different" than themselves.

With these novels and blank books, it is my goal for my students to embrace the over-arching theme: When given the choice, always choose KIND.

Wonder is a great book for teaching the elements of fiction; especially character analysis. However, it is an even more powerful text for teaching kindness, compassion and understanding for those who appear to be "different". In a world where people are often judged by appearences, I feel that is important to impart the knowledge and strategies needed to truly see people for who they are and not simply for what they look like. In the process, my students will also explore their own character traits and discover for themselves how truly WONDERful they are!
