The Unexplored Phenomenon

Help me give my students the chance to apply good concepts of physical science through exploring amazing phenomenon of ferrofluid and its uses in product engineering and design.

My Students

All of my students are from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Many of them are here at this public charter school due to not matching well with a traditional school model. Most of them have also been victims of some type of bullying and the smaller classes sizes and being around peers coming from similar backgrounds has helped them out tremendously.

Something I would like to provide for my students that is difficult to provide due to costs and availability is science lab supplies.

I feel that items such as Bunson burners, stove- ovens, beakers, and sample flasks would allow us to increase the variety of experiments we do. Many of the students in my class come from home environments where there is not a lot of sources of information such as books or interfaces to use the internet with. They have inquisitive minds and are very curious about the world; they just need a way to explore concepts and acquire skills.

My Project

I know that my students struggle with the concepts of understanding fractions and I believe that the fraction manipulatives can help them gain visual, hands-on practice with that concept.

The ferrofluid will make be a great physical science lab as I am teaching this class and future classes about magnetism and how products like ferrofluid are used in common items such as speakers and seals for the creation of a vacuum.

My school in particular has had a shortage of lab supplies and demonstration resources in biology. I am excited about being able to emphasize genetic mutations, heredity, and ecology.
