The Truth, The Whole Truth, & Nothing But The Truth Books

My students need nonfiction books and a book shelf to organize our books for guided reading.

My Students

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich said, "Well behaved women rarely make history." While one may or may not argue with this quote, few can dispute my variation, "Well prepared students rarely make bad grades." My students need preparation with nonfiction books and their features.

My students' reading levels ranging from preschool to third grade.

This is quite a spread in ability alone. Other factors make them even more diverse. There are three students who have special needs, six who qualify for Title I Reading help, and eight who speak languages other than English in their homes. No matter what their specific needs, each of them is excited about reading when given materials which are in his/her interests.

My Project

Each of my students loves SOME kind of book. They have been fascinated with stories as we have done author studies of the fictional stories of Jan Brett, Cynthia Rylant, and Tomie de Paola. They've enthusiastically written their own poetry as we studied the poetry of Jack Prelutsky. Boys and girls alike have identified the plot, problem, and solution then used these to infer information and create their own story posters and book reviews. The class is eager to read more about a subject after reading the fiction works. For example, everyone wanted to find out about real penguins after we read "Tacky the Penguin". The fiction serves as a springboard to nonfiction but nonfiction can be more difficult to find at the first grade reading level. My students need nonfiction books at their actual reading level so they can read the books on their own and do their inquiry based research.

There may be readers who cannot write but I know of no writers who cannot read.

You can be the force that helps 25 students do both in my first grade room. Their interests go from ballet and pink tutus to how brains were removed through the nasal cavity in mummy-making. All have the potential to do something great and one may be the next Bill Gates! The first step in learning is preparing them to LOVE learning so that they always want to learn more. I'll be a part of that. You can too!
