I teach 8th grade language arts in a school on the outskirts of a city. It seems as if I teach in a foreign land sometimes when we discuss US history. Every year when we study Native American Literature my students share with me their misconceptions they have learned from Disney movies. I like to read the Jean Fritz book The Double Life of Pocahontas with my students so they can have an understanding of how the colonization of America at Jamestown really began. This is a short book at an appropriate reading level for my students. I currently have 15 books but would like to have a whole class set and a few for students to be able to check out and take home if necessary. My students would not only benefit in English class from this experience but they will become more knowledgeable citizens.
