This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
The students who came up with the idea for the project were Brianna, Matheus, and Dayana. They are energetic, motivated students who want to use computers on a regular basis in the classroom.
The students have been learning about going green and recycling in school. One focus they talked about was paper waste. They heard about another school in the district that is paperless and wanted to make a difference here as well. I suggested using DonorsChoose.org to fundraise to buy chromebooks because DonorsChoose.org was successful for me in the past. They were excited and met during lunch in my room to answer the questions and create a plan. They hoped to get computers so they can no longer use paper and pen, but go completely paperless. They came up during lunches to find affordable, but effective chromebooks that could take the place of paper in the room. They talked to me about how instead of having binders, they could use Google Drive to organize their History work into folders and files. They would the files with me, and if all was successful, they would try to go paperless using these chromebooks in all of their classes.
Students will develop a variety of skills through this project. The use of computers in the classroom greatly increases their knowledge and exposure to information. Their research skills will improve when they utilize the computers in history class. Instead of simply writing facts or notes from the board, students can actually research and explore a topic like the Panama Canal. They can take interactive tours and see actual videos of what it is like to go through the canal. They will also learn teamwork during projects using computers. Students use Google Drive constantly to share and edit their projects. They form projects and edit them in and out of the classroom. They work together to create a project online to achieve a common goal.
In Their Own Words
"Our goal is to get computers to use everyday in class and hopefully encourage a change in our school to save paper.” (Brianna) “We want to give up our binders and paper and go completely digital. We have heard of another middle school in our district that is completely paperless, but our school does not offer that chance. If we get these computers we can do all our assignments and projects online.” (Matheus) “We can learn how to research better and use Google Drive in more detail." (Dayana)
Our teacher has mentioned the opportunity for some students to go completely digital in class. This would mean everything we do in the classroom would be online and on computers. No one has done this yet because we lack the computers. However, as the leaders of this project, we would be the first to volunteer for this opportunity. If we get these computers, we can become the trendsetters for turning our History class into a complete digital class.
The project is important to us because we want to help make a change in our school. With our teacher’s help we plan to start a school wide incentive to save our resources. We hope to create a community where our school trends to using more technology in the classroom for students and less paper. This can also help the environment because we are going paperless and saving trees.
