The Struggle for Survival Book Circles

My Project

The Boys in the Boat is a novel about the USA 8-man rowing crew's quest for gold in the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany. It chronicles the lives of several of the boys from childhood through adulthood. Some of the main components are their daily struggles to overcome hardships of living in small mining camps with step mothers who didn't want them, to being left behind when the family couldn't feed them during the Great Depression, to the sheer struggle to keep their place in the boat, to their first encounters with Nazi Germans' antisemitism, to finally their race to winning the gold. This novel would greatly complement my unit of "Struggles of Survival" with my sophomore classes. I plan to have students choose to read two of four options that all deal with survival during times of war to read over the course of the quarter.
