Getting students engaged with texts is often a struggle when the students see a novel as just another thing their teacher is making them read. But teaching novels that give them a voice and a sense of empowerment does the trick. Teaching Just Mercy to sophomore students will give them that voice they are often left searching for and will help promote the reading and writing skills essential to their futures. When students are engaged with a novel, they tend to work much more diligently on any assignments associated with it. Just Mercy will bridge the gap between what students deem as history and current events.
