The Stories Behind Ms. E's Door: Relating to Students' Lives

My students need reading materials that relate directly to their lives, so they will learn to enjoy reading in the classroom.

My Students

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers," said Charles W. Eliot. DURANGO STREET is a book that relates to my students' lives on the streets and the constant peer pressure of joining gangs.

My students are shining stars waiting to be discovered!

The darkness of their lives shower over the sun light each of them have to show. Many doubt them! The school they attend is labeled as a "high poverty" school. The resources are very limited to all the students. My students go home at night to various things one may never even dream of. The students are faced with decisions only adults should have to make. The neighborhoods are surrounded with gang members and bullies. These children are forced to grow up quickly. My students come into my classroom hating school and reading. Their attitudes are horrible, and they seem to hate life. Little do others know, these children have bad attitudes and act out to hide their pain and disappointment. Once a teacher opens up and accepts these students how they are, they will surprise you!

My Project

By having DURANGO STREET in my classroom, the students will be able to engage in the reading in order to learn. They will learn many things: vocabulary, social issues, literary terms, and how to deal with given situations. By giving them something relevant to their lives, they will enjoy reading and be more responsive to the classroom assignments. The book will teach them objectives for the ninth grade. After all, THEY WILL BE READING! While reading this book, the students will be required to write in their personal journals each day. Writing allows the learners to express themselves freely. I have a closet in my room where the students leave their journals after class. One side is for journal entries they want me to read, and the other side is for the journals they do not want to share. These journals create a trust-worthy relationship between me and the students. At the end of the year, the students choose one entry to place in the classroom book. Each student receives one.

This project is EXTREMELY important to my students and I.

Reading is so crucial in order to be successful in society. They will learn life-long lessons to take with them after high school. These children need a reason to come to school. If they enjoy my class and the readings, my mission is accomplished. The book will show them how important decisions are. It will teach them that it is alright to say no to peer pressure. They will learn from others' experiences. Please help me! THANKS!
