This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach gifted and talented students in grades K-5 in a Title I, low socioeconomic neighborhood school. All students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch and many receive take-home bags of food for the weekend. My students may come from diverse backgrounds, but what they all have in common is inquisitiveness and a love of learning.
My students are very enthusiastic learners who care about the world around them.
They are highly motivated students ready to expand their knowledge and apply the skills they learn to real-world problems.
My students, while identified as gifted, still need opportunities to develop their creative and critical thinking skills. The Maker Kits and STEM building challenge kits will provide an interactive, fun, and hands-on way for my students to increase their problem-solving skills with real-world applications. These kits also tie in with our gifted curriculum and can be used year after year in so many ways.
Through planning, collaboration, and critical thinking, my students can apply the engineering process in a fun and engaging way.
The Maker Kits are designed to be used in small groups and are construction-focused. Students will have an opportunity to build scale models of various buildings, machines, and even animals! This provides them with a concrete understanding of how real-world machines and objects work. The STEM building challenge kits are designed to be used individually or with a partner. With these kits, students are given a problem or challenge and they have to problem-solve a solution, modifying and improving along the way.
By utilizing these STEM kits, my students will see how fun and fascinating math, science, and engineering are and see the connections between the different fields of study, maybe even sparking a career path!
