My students come from diverse backgrounds (95% minority), yet they are unified in the pursuit of musical excellence. Music class provides a safe community for creative, emotional, and social opportunities. Students learn employable skills like goal-setting, teamwork, and responsibility through ensemble while making lifelong friendships!
I teach at a school in central Virginia where 70% of students are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch, and about 50% of music students speak English as a second language (current or former ESOL students)
Through the year, these talented musicians share their craft by performing for elementary students, at school concerts, and at community events. Some also play with local churches. Last school year, twenty-two students earned superior (top) ratings at the district solo and ensemble assessment.
My Project
My guitar classes need headphones to turn amplifiers into self-directed "silent" practice stations. Because I have multi-level classes, these stations are necessary for simultaneous independent practice and large group rehearsal in the same space.
Through your donation, our traditional music classroom will transform into a modern technology-assisted music classroom for the digital age.
Unlike cheap dollar store earbuds, these kid-friendly, over-the-ear headphones offer noise cancelling capability. My students will be able to hear themselves over the noise of our busy music room without cranking up the volume to unsafe levels.
Included in this project are 6' audio cables so that students can plug in at a standing or seated distance. I've also included a mini mixer for "silent" musical collaboration. Please help me to provide materials for these eager musicians!
