Music is a core part of my students' everyday lives. Whether they play in the school's band and orchestra or try to listen to SoundCloud rappers during class with their AirPods, each of them enjoys music, but they don't truly understand how it works.
Building their musical instruments is an interactive way for my kids to learn the fundamentals of sound waves.
In our Waves Unit, they learn about how a sound wave's amplitude and frequency can affect a sound's volume and pitch. By designing and crafting their musical instruments, they have the opportunity to reinforce their understanding of the basics of waves and sounds creatively. This foundation is important, as many have expressed interest in a career in the music industry, either as music artists, producers, or sound engineers.
Many of our science projects utilize cardboard for building, but we don't always have easy access to the resources to make it a smooth process. We hope to use cardboard, scissors, and hot glue sticks to assist in the crafting, and having nylon strings will make the homemade guitars all the more realistic.
