Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a wonderful, family-oriented, Title I Program Improvement school with awesome students! The majority of our families are considered to be low to low-middle income with many living below the poverty line. More than one-third of our students speak English as a second language.

Our school offers extra assistance and enrichment when needed.

We have a part-time intervention teacher who spends 100% of her day on student academic intervention. Our school is lucky enough to have three autism-specific classes with students who mainstream into general education classes throughout the day. We have a resource class for special education students and for those who need extra help; a garden teacher (paid for by a generous grant) who works with the students on the Next Generation Science Standards; volunteers who come read with and/or tutor our students several times a week; and many teachers who run intervention and enrichment classes after school.

My Project

My students love listening to music while they are working. They also love listening to stories from our reading book being read by someone other than me. Who can blame them? Music really does help them focus on their tasks. Every time I turn on music, whether it be 70s pop, Bach or KidzBop, my students' focus and time-on-task improve. They also really enjoy listening to the stories in our reading book. Listening to the stories improves their reading comprehension.

A new wireless speaker for the classroom is just what we need, as our current system is full of static and often unreliable.

The system we have requires me to hook my phone to a cable that is attached to a wireless microphone that projects to a speaker. The cable is old, the batteries no longer charge and the connection is spotty and inconsistent. A new system wouldn't require cables and would hold a charge longer than 20 minutes.

The speaker would also be helpful when the students are learning new songs for their music performances. We are currently learning songs about California for a performance in the spring. A new speaker would allow me to play the songs and the kids to sing along and practice during the day while they work.
