The Snack Shack is Back

My Students

I teach special education at a rural high school in which 45% of all of our students are on a free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and a wide variety of home lives.

I teach in an essential skills classroom where my students are intellectually challenged, and over 50% are on the autism spectrum.

In my class,​ we are learning everyday living skills, job skills, and social skills as the majority of our curriculum. My students are eager to learn. They come to school each day with a desire to learn and grow but they are facing extreme intellectual challenges. However, they still show up every day with a positive attitude and smiles on their faces.

Many of my students will never be able to live independently but we strive every day to teach living and job skills so they can be productive members of society.

My Project

In August my class and I started a small classroom business to help my special education students better understand money and to teach them basic cooking skills. We have worked very hard to learn to take orders, collect and count money, cook, and deliver or product. Our business is booming! We average about 20 - 30 teachers weekly that order our snacks.

We have become such a success that we are looking to expand our cooking skills and try new more difficult snacks.

Our snacks have included popcorn, chocolate covered Oreos, blessing bags, Chex mix, Oreo Balls, Buckeyes, and even more. We would like to start making cookies and breads that we would like to have a mixer to create. We have requests for chips and salsa that we could use a food processor to make the salsa, as well as to help us crush up the Oreos for our Oreo balls.

Since starting our Snack Shack business more students have joined or program so we need more aprons for our new students. We are excited to start making more elaborate snacks if we are lucky enough to receive our new cooking supplies.
