I am a NYC department of education elementary school teacher. I work in an area of Brooklyn in a hard school to staff. My school is a Title I school and is in a low income area. Currently 90% of the students receive free lunch. I am a special education teacher who will be teaching first grade collaborative team teaching next year. Collaborative team teaching is a new educational approach where the class is comprised of 60% general education students and 40% students with special needs. I would like to help transform these emergent readers into fluent readers. One way to build first grade reading skills is through phonemic awareness and sight word vocabulary. Although phonics is a part of the daily curriculum, and students use the word wall daily. A time where students are able to independently work on these skills is also beneficial. Center time is on opportunity for my students to have hands- on experiences where they can reinforce skills taught throughout the year. Reading is a subject in which many students struggle, I would like to eliminate the struggle for my students. The lakeshore reading supplies will provide my students with multiple opportunities to build and strengthen their reading skills. These supplies will enhance and enrich their learning increasing their chances for reading success. Not only will these skills benefit my students during English language arts but across the curriculum in writing, social studies and science. Working with students with diverse needs is a challenging and rewarding job. I would like to begin the new year with the supplies that will help me to meet this challenge as well as meet the needs of my students.
