Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a Title I school, my students are faced with problems both in school and out of school. Many of my students leave school to help their parents either cook or take care of a sibling at home. I teach three regular language arts classes, many of whom who still struggle to read and need support in order to be successful.
Despite the obstacles they face outside of school, they always arrive to class eager and thirsty for knowledge.
Everyday I remind them that they are loved. I am not only a teacher, but a listening ear and someone who cares. I make sure my students leave everyday remembering this. I cannot control their home experiences, but I can control the experiences they have within my classroom.
I teach at a school where 80% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. I teach at a school where many students come from single family homes and have various other siblings they share responsibility for. I teach at a school where I know I make a difference in the lives of many.
My Project
The Cricut machine will be a wonderful addition to our already innovating classroom. My students love producing creative products to exhibit their work. In my class, we like to think outside of the box.
Why write 5 essays, when you can write 3 essays and 2 comic strips?
Why write a haiku on lined paper, when you can write it on a cardboard and illustrate it using various mediums? My class loves making language arts fun. We are not a normal language arts class. We are innovating! Although we are innovating, our classroom and students lack the products to make their projects reach even their own standards. The Cricut machine will allow us to create die-cuts to incorporate into comic books, props for plays, and figurines to help illustrate writing projects.
Not only will this machine be of use to our language arts class, but it will also be useful to our ELL(English Language Learner) class. The Cricut machine will allow me to show the class what certain words look like, how they are used, and allow students to use the die cuts as manipulatives. I know that this Cricut machine will be very useful to the students!
