The Second Annual Batalla de Libros

Help me give my students a chance to participate in a Spanish Battle of the Books. 4 titles were chosen by Spanish Immersion students as being engaging and compelling literature, titles that will help all students feel successful.

My Students

After 25 years of teaching six different grade levels, I can confidently say junior high students are the best! In a typical year, I have between 160-190 students that walk through my classroom door to learn Spanish. They range in age as well as Spanish levels. They're between the ages of 12 and 15 years old. Some are heritage Spanish learners and some are learning Spanish for the first time. Because I teach various grades and levels, I often have my students for 2-3 years in a row. Between living and teaching in a small town and teaching various levels of Spanish, I know my students and their families pretty well. It makes my job that much better!

My quest as a teacher is to make learning Spanish engaging, interactive and comprehensible, all the while making a personal connection with each and every child.

In a typical class, we sing a Spanish song, act out a skit, and read compelling literature. Because of this, my students always enter my classroom ready to learn and extremely high energy. Making my class fun for the students makes it fun for me to come to work each day. I love my job!

My Project

Last year, the Spanish Immersion program at Emerson Junior High, held a Battle of the Books in Spanish (Batalla de libros). Over 60 students participated by reading up to 4 chapter books in Spanish and then competed in teams to answer comprehension questions. This was done during the pandemic year, so I am confident that since we are back at school, we will have even more students particpate.

Two 10th grade Spanish Immersion alumni are spearheading this event and have chosen four compelling and engaging titles that are easy enough to read for all 7-9th graders.

My hope is that we get lots of our students to participate so that we can have a second successful batalla de libros and interest enough students to make this an annual tradition at Emerson Junior High.
