This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students have challenging lives. Their struggles are ones that the majority of us will never have to worry about. These include living in a safe neighborhood, or not being sure where their next meal will come from. School may be the only safe place, with consistency and support. My goal is to provide them with the resources they need to be successful in school, so it will be a positive experience despite what goes on outside of school.
Every minute they are here is valuable so I am always looking for resources that allow for constant learning and discovering.
They deserve these materials that allow them to access education, so they are able to achieve better life outcomes.
My Project
I am a special education teacher and the biggest struggle I face is getting my students access to the general education curriculum at their level. Many times their reading levels limit them on what they are able to use when learning in science. This listening center would be such a helpful technology in my classroom. I would be able to adapt it for all grade levels. It also has a blue tooth option which would allow for connection to an iPad which has text to speech access. I would be able to stream science content materials to my students as well. This would remove the reading barrier they experience and effectively learn about science through texts.
Also, these materials allow me to create an independent work center for students.
It is always helpful to have independent activities for students to complete. This allows me to work in smaller groups with students that need extra help. By creating a listening center with these materials, some students will be able to follow along with the books on CD resources, while I work with other students. This way, everyone can be learning at the same time.
