Our middle school is located in one of the oldest areas of our city. The west side of Columbus has a rich history that predates Columbus becoming the capital. Many of our students are unaware of the important nature of the history of their community. They have much to be proud of and yet our area does not often receive the recognition that it should. I want my students to begin to see the value of their community and recognize their important role in it.
Much like the area, teens and preteens can often be underestimated.
No one should ever underestimate my students. They are powerful. They have a voice. They are the change we need in this world.
In addition to performing in our music program, my students are also active in other areas of school and our community. Our group, "We Are the Change" works to support our school and community through area cleanups, weekend food distribution, and amplifying student voice.
My Project
While we are learning from home, I want to take advantage of the time to expand on our unit about the science of sound. My middle school band musicians want to understand all there is to know about music and this includes how sound occurs, how our ears perceive sound, and how a performance space impacts sound. We will use the tuner to measure frequencies to tell if a note is in tune. The decibel meter will help us to measure the impact of the sound in a room. The Pear Deck membership will help to make this unit much more interactive while studying from home. This is a yearly membership that we can use even when we return. Finally, the Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will add supplemental lessons to our unit.
Music and science should be accessible to every student.
