Our middle school is located in one of the oldest areas of our city. The west side of Columbus has a rich history that predates Columbus becoming the capital. Many of our students are unaware of the important nature of the history of their community. They have much to be proud of and yet our area does not often receive the recognition that it should. I want my students to begin to see the value of their community and recognize their important role in it.
Much like the area, teens and preteens can often be underestimated.
My students are capable of achieving anything that they want. They are powerful. They have a voice. They are the change we need in this world.
In addition to performing in our music program, my students are also active in other areas of school and our community. Our group We Are the Change works to support our school and community through area cleanups, weekend food distribution, and amplification of student voice.
My Project
Over the past few years, there has been a collective push to add arts to STEM, creating STEAM programs instead. It is important for musicians to understand acoustics and the science of sound. The physical location where you create music has a direct impact on the sound that you create. Are you in a large space or small? Are there hard surfaces like tile floors or soft surfaces like carpet?
For this project, members of my eighth grade band will study how sound tiles affect the acoustics in various spaces where they live.
We will also study sound waves, how sound travels, and how the ear perceives sound. This is a great way to incorporate science and the arts and to allow every student to have a practical application for the science of sound.
Not only will students learn about acoustics, but they will also learn about leading pioneers in science, including Christine Darden one of the scientists featured in Hidden Figures that researched sonic boom. There is also a highly practical application as students will create a sound-reducing practice space for when they practice at home. This will allow students that live with adults that work the night shift or students that live in multi-housing or apartment units to have a practice area at home that will better support continued practice.
This is Act 1 of this project. Act 2 will focus on students applying what they learn at home to our school auditorium to create a better performance space.
