Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in one of the most diverse counties in the nation, which is directly reflected in my classroom! I have 4 different native languages in my room and students from all over the world. I have some refugees, some students who have only been in the country a year, many from single parent households, all living in an area with high poverty rates. My students are all vastly unique and we work together to use our strengths to help each other grow. We celebrate ourselves and each other and our similarities and differences every day.
No matter their physical, cognitive or social abilities, my students love coming to school to learn.
They even ask if they can come to school on the weekends too! This class has a true love of learning and each other and it is amazing to be apart of.
We have a positive cooperative and collaborative classroom environment and a family mindset where growth is paramount and every day is a new opportunity to grow and learn from the day before. We always have another chance to make a better decision and continue to strive for more. My students are truly incredible!
My Project
I have recently learned that the reading program my district uses is not based on science and is not helping my struggling readers grow. I need a way to help these students immediately because if students are not proficient readers by third grade, they will likely never catch up. This can lead to lifelong struggles, including higher rates of incarceration and poverty. I cannot waste any more time on ineffective instruction for the kids who need it most and this training will help me bridge the gap!
Orton-Gillingham is a science-based program that incorporates multi-sensory activities to engage more parts of the brain at once in order to deepen comprehension and improve retention.
This program is especially helpful for students who have learning disabilities or hindrances such as Dyslexia. This training will give me the tools I need to actually help those students at the highest risk. I am now only using instructional techniques based on science but cannot afford this training on my own. Your generosity will help me become a more effective teacher and improve the future of all children.
