My students come from an area of high poverty. Many of them struggle with ADHD and some are still learning to assimilate into this country. These stools and stability balls will allow their bodies and minds to remain active and engaged even while seated and will help even the most fidgety students meet the expectations of staying in one place (at times). As a class, we move all around the room constantly and are very active! I think it is unrealistic of me to expect all of them to be able to go from that level of activity and engagement to sitting in a chair and remaining still for a period of time. These flexible seating options will allow their bodies to move while staying in one place. The wobble stools and stability balls will help build connections between the body and mind which improves focus and working memory (essential for executive functioning and retention). These seating options will be available in all parts of the room so students will have the option to choose which seat would suit them best no matter where they are in the room (table seat, my table or the whiteboard table). This will help keep them in one spot while still allowing them to move. These seating options have also been shown to help students struggling with attention issues which can be a great hindrance to the learning process. I graduated in December and started teaching in January and am trying to adapt my physical classroom environment to both my teaching style and the needs of my students. This flexible seating will change the way their brains function while seated and help counteract some of the negative effects of poverty. Student focus and achievement will greatly improve with this seating!
